For those of you that live in certain states, having a title is a big deal.

Almost as if this was an attempt at a sports car. I have only see two one in Nebraska and One off of a forrest trail in Idaho. That one had the wheel removed and was running a stationary air pump for an abandoned mine. The wheels were stacked next to it all under cover. The interior had become mostly mouse food by then and it was certain that nobody had been near it for many years as the trail we were on had been abandoned for some time.You are in the right place!

Studebaker History Podcast Hoosier History Live recently did a podcast about the legacy of the Studebaker brothers and the making of the Studebaker cars we know and love today.Regardless of naming conventions, they sure built some amazing cars! This project is in need of a lot of work, including plenty of rust repair. Many of these cars ended up being chopped up and turned into hot rods, making this a rare find.
If it were mine, I would struggle deciding what to do with it. I guess I would start by making it safe to drive and then see where I want to go from there.

He has some amazing cars in his collection, look at one of the pictures in his Ebay ad. I love this old Studebaker. I imagine that if this coupe had the Planar independent suspension the seller would have pointed out such a unique feature.
James good article. Pictures are worth a thousand words…I wish I had taken more photos of the cars I worked on through the years. Scars on the knuckles, etc are badges of honor or stupidity that will remind us of days gone by.

He obviously lived through the Depression and had raised a family, cars were a big part of his life. So glad I did. He mentioned having an album and the cars he owned were interesting enough that I would have sat through a slide show.Located in Debary, Florida is this Studebaker President.
Designed and built at the height of the Art Deco period, you can find this beauty here on eBay. Better hurry though because the auction is ending soon. This particular car has been owned by the same family since The father purchased it inand in it was given a fresh coat of paint. The finish that we see now is that very paint job. As can be seen from this shot, the car still holds a pretty decent shine. Some paint chipping and scratches can be seen in some of the other photos, but it is hard to determine the presence of any rust.
Unfortunately there are also no shots of the underside of the car and no mention of rust in the ad. The first series had been built as direct competition to Cadillac, Packard and Lincoln.

Regardless of this fact the car could be considered quite luxurious for its day. The interior trim appears to be complete and is probably all original. Sadly the front seat is quite tattered, and should probably be reupholstered.
The rear seat, trim and the roof-lining all appear to be in quite good condition. I have to admit that I am fascinated by how far back the rear seat is. From there, peering out through those quarter windows would make you feel like royalty. From my perspective this is the part of the interior that really grabs me. I have a deep love for all things Art Deco. This dash is the stuff of dreams for me. The bonus is that it all appears to be in fantastic condition for a car that is 81 years old. Having said that, this shot also indicates that the window rubbers might be quite perished. There are two shots of the engine in the ad, and sadly this is the best of them. You can see that wonderful The owner states that it runs well, but that the clutch disc has stuck to the flywheel through lack of use.
From that we can deduce that this car has been in storage for a very long time. So, how do you put a value on a car like this? Depending on what the reserve is on this beautiful old classic, this may well be quite a good investment. I guess it goes to show how competitive the automotive market was; even the good ones fell by the wayside.

A great car to drive and enjoy while fixing it up. What a beautiful design!Found in a barn likely many moons ago, this Dictator has been in good company with other beautiful art deco machines, but it would seem the seller is looking to thin out his collection.
Be sure to take a look at this beauty here on ebay out of Temperance, Michigan. Although this Dictator appears to be very complete and with a stern asking price, the seller has offered little information. I would assume the engine and all of the mechanicals have been at rest for quite a while.
No telling what the state of the engine is, but we can certainly hope for the best, but expect the worst. There is some minor surface rust in the engine bay, and the wiring looks surprisingly decent. The steering wheel is in excellent condition reflecting no major damage of any kind.Rock organ
With minor corrosion, and surface rust, the dash is nice as well, looking as if it would clean up nicely while maintaining its aged appearance. With some possibility for rodent activity, the bench seat is mostly there, but tattered. In fair condition for a 80 year old car, an upholstery job would do wonders for this classic. Easily the most unique and iconic feature of this Dictator is the very unusual shaped Deco rear window. Split windows and oval window are buzz words in the classic car world, but what would you call this window? Easy to fall in love with, this Studebaker is a solid looking survivor, but there is a nasty little secret that needs to come to light. The trunk floorand part of the rear roll pan area suffers from rot.
There does appears to be a sheet metal rip on the passenger side rear fender, that has been realigned with the shape of the fender. One good thing about the roll pan rot is that it is well hidden by the rear bumper, so the survivor like appearance could likely be maintained with metal work, and some paint blending. A restoration would also be a no-brainer on this beauty as these Deco window coupes are rare to say the least. Have you ever seen one of these rare and unique beauties? This has got to be the swoopiest?
It is such a cool style, no matter what someone does to this, it will still look nice. Hi Dolphin, actually, that name has an interesting history. Apparently, the only dictator at the time was Mussolini, and had an image of audacity and strength.

The rise of Hitler caused Studebaker to end the Dictator name inand called it the Commander, so this must be one of the last Dictators. Studebaker was one of the top car makers. The Studebaker nameplate merged with Packrd in The S-P corp lasted until 66 rolling thir last model off the floor of the Canada plant that year.

Au contraire-Mike Kluth's Stude is larger than life when you see this unusual prewar pickup in person. The J5 Coupe Express was penned and manufactured at a time when design and aesthetics were still important to the world, before the Art Deco movement came to an end and every man wore a hat and ladies dressed up just to leave the house. Mike's grandiose truck is one of roughly 3, built in its first year, with a total production between 5, and 5, until '39, when they were phased out for the '40 model year.
It was love at first sight when Mike was introduced to the Coupe Express in '72, and it took him almost 20 years to find the right one hiding in a barn in Menomonee, Wisconsin. George Shilling bought the truck new in April '37 to use on his farm, and he later sold it to a local farm implement dealer for more work detail until '59, when the timing gear gave way and he parked it in the barn with 61, Mike had heard about the truck for 20 of its year slumber, but he was never able to meet with the owners.
Patience was a virtue, and he and his late father hauled it home with his '57 Studebaker Transtar pickup-yeah, it made a great picture. When the guys returned home with the J5 in tow, Mike's wife, Heather, asked if his dad bought another Stude, which was a reasonable question due to his lifelong affair with them and vintage Indian motorcycles, but Mike said no, he had. She shook her head, and they carried on.
Nine more years passed before Mike and his dad started in on the restoration, seeing as it took that long to find all the parts they needed back in those pre-Internet days.
Kluth knew Studebaker engines like the back of his hand, so he went to town rebuilding the ci flathead six back to stock specs. The Coupe Express was built on a rigid Dictator sedan chassis, and it even incorporated the sedan's original cab. Mike rebuilt every moving part on the '37, including the I-beam frontend, the Dana 4. Many of the J5s were sold without a pickup box but with rear fenders so customers could mount a utility box.
The stock gas tank is behind the rearend and between the framerails, which left more room in the J5's cab and bed. The Coupe Express was only sold with a driver-side taillight, so Mike decided to copy and fabricate one for the right side for safety reasons since he drives it so often.
After Mike carefully ironed out all the wrinkles in the truck from years of hard use on the farm, he went to see Larry Neman of Neman Painting in Waukesha to return the '37 back to its original glossy black elegance.
The interior is as stock as it should be for a restoration, with one exception-Mike modified a rearview mirror from a sedan to fit. The '37 Coupe Express never came with one, and they weren't even an option, but we'll let it slide. Believe it or not, even the dashboard and instrumentation are original and unrestored and function just fine thanks to the six-volt positive ground electrical system. Mike ordered an upholstery kit from Loga Enterprises and installed it along with his own carpet.
Unfortunately, Mike's father passed away a week after rebuilding the motor and never got to see the '37 to completion, which is Mike's only regret about the project, but now it serves as a tribute to Mike's dad and his lifelong love of Studebakers.
Mike has logged nearly 10, miles on the Coupe Express and is having a blast. Thanks to the Kluth family for showing me some fine Wisconsin hospitality!
